My middle name is Forrest and most people call me JT. I was born and raised in New York City by great parents and have lived in Massachusetts, China and Connecticut. I'm back in New York living a couple blocks from Central Park. I'm married to the brilliant and attractive Qinghua Li, an engineer with Lucent Technologies. We met in China, where she is from, and began a relationship by correspondence. Bike racing is a big part of my life -- I've been racing since 1983 with a couple of years off. Currently category II and 30+ on the road. Competitive highlights include twice New York State Road Champion in the 30-34 age group, winning the Tour of the Valleys (cat III) in 1986 and the race that replaced it, the Keene RR, in 1996 (30-34), 14th at the collegiate nationals road race (1986) and finishing the pro-am stage race at Fitchburg a couple of times -- the first time being the year Lance Armstrong won it. And I rode 250 miles in 24 hours while in high school (Hunter College High School -- maybe the best school in the world) which wasn't bad for a teenager in cutoff shorts and a t-shirt! I'm a member of Century Road Club Association. CRCA was founded in 1898 and is one of the largest bike racing clubs in the United States; I served for four year's on its board with positions including head of coaching and newsletter editor. I race for the Deno's Wonder Wheel cycling team, based in Brooklyn. I've also been President of the Harvard University Cycling Association and a member of the Northeast Bicycle Club, the Laurel Bicycle Club, and the Yale University Cycling Team. Recently, I've also started ski racing, or really ski racing again, as I was a member of Harvard's Nordic Ski Team. Now I'm part of CW-X/ThinkRacing.org, mainly a middle- or back-of-the-pack racer. Beyond racing, I've worked as a bike messenger in New York City and have ridden from Boston to Los Angeles raising money to fight hunger in the US and Africa. Professionally, I work at The Synergos Institute, a nonprofit organization developing sustainable solutions to poverty around the world. Synergos is best known for its work with local partners to build community development foundations in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Besides some degree of satisfaction in this work, I enjoy meeting interesting people from different places and backgrounds. Prior to joining Synergos in 1991, I worked as an English language teacher at the South China University of Technology and as a lecturer at the Guangdong Province Technical Cadre Advanced Training Institute, both in Guangzhou, China. I concentrated in east asian studies in college and have a masters degree in international relations. Contact me by email
